Read on for tips and useful information. Welcome to Trinamics and to the Netherlands!

1. Ensure You Have the Correct Visa and Work Permit

At Trinamics, we’re happy to handle this crucial process for you. If you’re joining us, we’ll ensure you have the proper documentation to live and work in the Netherlands.

  • Visa: Depending on your country of origin, we’ll check if you need a visa and assist you with the process.

  • Work Permit: If required, we’ll make sure the application is submitted correctly and on time.

  • Highly Skilled Migrant Program: If you qualify, we’ll arrange all necessary paperwork in collaboration with your employer, so you don’t need to worry about a thing.

  • Our expertise ensures you can start your new job without any hassle!

2. Arrange Housing

The Dutch housing market can be competitive, especially in cities like Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Eindhoven. It’s wise to start your search early. At Trinamics, we provide tips and guidance to help you find suitable housing quickly.

  • Options: You can rent an apartment, share a house with others, or temporarily stay in a hotel or Airbnb while looking for a permanent home.

  • Important: Ensure your rental contract is official and check if you can register your address with the municipality.

  • While we don’t arrange housing, we’ll gladly point you in the right direction to make your search as smooth as possible!

3. Register with the Municipality (BRP)

Within five days of arrival, you must register with the Personal Records Database (BRP) in the municipality where you live. You’ll need:

  • A valid passport or ID card.

  • A rental agreement or proof of residence.

  • A legalized and translated birth certificate (if applicable).

4. Apply for a BSN (Citizen Service Number)

During your municipality registration, you’ll receive a Citizen Service Number (BSN). This number is essential for:

  • Opening a bank account.

  • Receiving your salary.

5. Arrange Health Insurance

In the Netherlands, basic health insurance is mandatory. You must arrange this within four months of registering with the municipality.

What’s covered? Basic insurance includes standard care, such as visits to the general practitioner and hospital care, if needed.

  • Tip: Check if your current health insurance provides temporary coverage in the Netherlands.

  • Did you know? In the Netherlands, you first visit your general practitioner when you’re sick. They assess your situation and refer you to a specialist or hospital if necessary. It’s important to register with a GP early.

6. Register with a General Practitioner and Dentist

In the Netherlands, you choose your own GP for medical care. Dental care is often not included in basic insurance, but supplementary insurance can cover it.

7. Open a Dutch Bank Account

A local bank account is essential for receiving your salary and paying rent.

  • What you’ll need: BSN, valid ID, and proof of address.

  • Popular banks: ING, ABN AMRO, Rabobank, or online banks like bunq and KNAB.

8. Taxes

Once registered, you’ll receive mail from the Dutch Tax Authority. Keep the following in mind:

  • Income tax and municipal taxes.

  • Possible allowances, such as housing or healthcare allowances.

  • If you’re eligible for the 30% tax ruling, we can assist with the application process. This program offers tax benefits for highly skilled expats coming to work in the Netherlands. We’re happy to help you take advantage of it!

9. Learn the Language

While most Dutch people speak English, learning Dutch will help you feel more at home and integrate into the community faster. At Trinamics, we can recommend suitable language courses to help you pick up the language and make both work and personal life easier.

10. Get to Know the Culture

Discovering Dutch culture will make your expat experience even more enjoyable!

With these steps, you’ll have a solid foundation to start your new life in the Netherlands smoothly. Don’t forget to enjoy everything the country has to offer!
